Dry January can be a daunting concept for many.. Or if you’re still hungover from the festive period it can be considered a God send! 🙏 But if you’re unsure what it might do for you here’s a little look into the benefits.

  1. Going alcohol free gives you a better night’s sleep. If you have a better night’s sleep, then the positive effects of this will show on your skin. Lack of sleep can lead to a build-up in the stress hormone cortisol. The more cortisol there is in the body, the more your skin will suffer with things like breakouts, oiliness and worry lines!

2. Avoiding alcohol will help to stop your skin becoming dehydrated. Alcohol strips the moisture from your skin leaving it dry and crepey.If you’re an excessive drinker, you can develop a zinc deficiency, which can cause a histamine reaction that leads to facial redness and flushing, or rosacea, Dermatologist Jaliman said. During Dry January, you may start to notice your skin looks and feels better ― but once you start drinking again, Jaliman said, alcohol will start to have a dehydrating effect within weeks.

3. Alcohol can also act as a diuretic, which can increase fluid loss and lead to dehydration, possibly damaging the skin, according to dermatologists. Plus, when people stop drinking, they get more calories from foods; this tends to improve their vitamin intake, which can also make their skin appear healthier.

4. Just like alcohol dehydrates your skin, it can also dehydrate your hair, causing brittle, dry hair prone to split ends and frizziness. During Dry January you may see an improvement in the quality of your hair, which can only be a good thing!
